Thanksgiving -- Simple Is The New Complicated

Getting in the mood for Thanksgiving and keeping things simple, as usual. As a creature of habit and tradition on this one, the word simplicity rises to a whole other level. I remain a don't fix it if it 'aint broke fangirl.

In The Kitchen -- Just Olive Oil + Salt

I've been keeping things pretty lax in the kitchen lately. The solar vortex in California this year might have a little something to do with it.

Thanksgiving... Give Me What I Know And Love

As I've said before, I am an utter traditionalist when it comes to Thanksgiving. Don't fix it if it ain't broke -- a gem of a saying and I think probably one of the most overlooked keys to happiness in life.

In The Kitchen -- Hot Apple Cider Glory

At the most relaxing Halloween gathering I think I can ever recall, in the home of Kristina of Estilo, I was treated to a divine concoction -- a hot gin apple cider that Stephanie of Shindig stirred up for the grown ups to sip while trick-or-treating.

In The Kitchen -- Arugula Salad Divineness

A favorite salad that I've been making for years. It's light and refreshing while flavorful and divine. Perfect for dinner time, but I actually first threw this together to serve for a brunch alongside quiche -- still possibly my top way to have it.

Out + About -- Farmer's Market Madness

With a Farmer's Market appearing somewhere in town on various days of the week, it's quite easy to get caught up in the ever-growing foraging fest. When summer hits, I get an even bigger surge of Farmer's Market madness. (We all suffer from a little bit of it at this point, don't we?)

In The Kitchen -- Summer Smoothie Time

With an impressive heatwave under our belt in California (my onboard thermostat actually hit one hundred and two last week!), I've been thrust straight into summer and smoothie mode.

Nothing does hit the spot better in warm temps, and I've already got two mainstays on a loop -- one with papaya that I've been whipping up for years, and a newer green one that I can't seem to get enough of.

They go like this...

SPINACH KALE SMOOTHIE
{based on the green smoothie served at Cafe Luna}

Ingredients:

1 handful Spinach
1 handful Kale
1 Banana
1 cup Almond Milk (or milk of your choice)
A few dashes of Cinnamon
1 scoop Protein Powder (or a superfoods powder)

Whirl it all in a blender, and voila -- iron, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, protein filled, fresh green glory deliciousness in a glass.

Next up:

PAPAYA CASHEW SMOOTHIE
{my own concoction}

Half of a Papaya
1 Banana {use frozen if looking for a colder smoothie}
1 handful of raw Cashews (or swap for Pecans for another kind of yum)
1/2 cup Greek Yogurt
A drizzle of Flaxseed Oil
3/4 cup Almond Milk (or milk of your choice)

Blend... pour... sip... and savor this healing, anti-aging, immune building, protein delivering, subtle, frothy, glass of mellowness.

In The Kitchen -- Spring Break-Fast // Yogurt Bowls

I'm definitely more of a savory breakfast eater than sweet (poached eggs, scrambles, and omelets are my go-tos) but sometimes I get on a roll, especially when spring and summer hit, where nothing sounds better than a cool, refreshing yogurt bowl.

End of the Year... Let's Review, Shall We?

Since The-Pastry was hatched at the very end of last year, all of the posts feel part of year one and 2013. So here goes, a glance back at some fave posts so far about everything and nothing...

Soiree Season...

My weekend kicked off with a dreamy birthday gathering for a friend at her home, curated by born beautifier, Stephanie Sanders, of ShindigIt was an evening outdoors made heavenly with fireplace, flatbread pizza, and string lights. Other favorite elements of the night have succeeded in whisking me right into holiday soiree mode...

In The Kitchen -- Noodle Kugel

The best dishes in the world are the ones you grew up on, no? They are probably the ultimate definition of comfort food.

In The Kitchen -- Easy Pizzy

Everyone needs a good cheat in the kitchen for those lazy days where you just can't lift a spatula, and this is one of mine...

In The Kitchen -- Ladybug Snacks

Cutest little snack that kids make themselves. Nutritious, fun, and tasty. You'll find yourself nibbling on them, too. (And there's an adult version at the end.)
